[XCSSA] Tips for DIY NAS?

Regarding backup software. BackupPC is pretty good. Easy to use and  
set up. You can make it client heavy (rsync), or bandwidth heavy (pure  
smb for windows, or tar for linux).

I tend to be biased towards not doing the embedded solutions since I  
often want to do more than those little CPUs can handle. Although,  
with a NAS (the idea going round in my head was an ATAoE system) I  
wouldn't need very much, just ssh to talk to it, and that's about it.  
Nifty graphs and such would be nice :) I/O graphs, and possibly some  
sort of nrpe to allow nagios to keep an eye on the health of my disks.
