You can use any Linux live CD and the package "usb-creator" that will give you 
a bootable thumb drive PLUS the extra room becomes your home partition AND 
persistent root that you can install packages to, atop the bootable image. 
Not sure if this would work with a BSD or not .. I would imagine that you 
would have to hack at it and have the equiv of cramfs BSD support or such.  
Maybe John Baker can assist (being the resident NetBSD d00d).

I touched on usb-creator at the last meeting.  I can give a demo on this at 
this meeting if you want.
