So I got pretty excited about the Christmas lights - big thanks to
Charles for showing us his setup! I haven't completely decided
(assuming I have the time) if I should opt for the tried and true
approach that Charles showed or try to make something happen with
MIDI. I thought I would share some tidbits for those interested:

So basically, the pieces are there, and someone is working on a
MidiBox / MIOS setup to talk to DMX relays and there's code that looks
pretty easy to modify for a purely homebrew solution. Of course, all
this doesn't solve the problem of choreographing all the lights - and
a MIDI sequencer won't have the cool picture of the house like
Charles' software does. But for musicians, it might be a bit easier to
work with. Worst case, you could grab the General MIDI files of some
popular tunes from the Interwebz (though I would plan on making my own
stuff).
Just some food for thought!
