It's called "Free McBoot", and it's really better if you get a Fat
with a hard drive. (note that you can use any normal HD for this; the
official Sony drive is better saved for people who want to play Final
Fantasy XI. Also, some WD drives may not fit onto the connector
because the spacing is wrong. And Sony supposedly fixed the loophole
in the last few revisions of the Slim.
The main thing you need is something that will execute code off of a
compatible USB memory stick, so that you can install the boot code to
a PS2 memory card. I know that Codebreaker V8.0 or later works, and
some particular super-deluxe version of Game Shark works too.
As for using a USB drive, remember that this is USB 1.0, with a 10
mbit limit, and you're not going to get that whole amount. 1X DVD
drives have a 10 mbit maximum speed, so the result will probably be
slower than the original DVD.
