It also had legal issues because it was derived from what once was a  
commercial product with several key pieces having non-free copyrights  
that certain corporations felt obliged to defend.

GNU was conceived, designed and written from scratch for the purpose  
of being a free OS, and all Gnu programs were covered by GPL from the  
beginning.  Work on GNU began in the early 1980's IIRC.
