Yeah, that's what it was called, or actually Hurd.

Not easy to find out about it anymore, even on the Gnu website, Gnu/
Linux reigns.

Obviously Linus had the advantage of being first. Gnu was dragging
getting all the most sophisticated technology into their kernel from
the outset. But because Linux, which started as a vacation
experiment, got started first (based on the simple ideas in Minix,
with whatever else Linus had to add to just to get it working on
x86), right after that he had the benefit of legions of helpers all
over the world. Then, linux had unstoppable momentum compared to
other free OS development efforts.

In things like software, being first and almost good enough is
usually how you win, unless you have tons of money like Micro$oft and
can make up time later, buyout competitors and/or crush them into the
dirt with marketing and distribution monopolies.

If Stallman's goal was to rule the world, he failed because of his
strategy. Sometimes, doing things "the right way" is not the right
way. But that wasn't his goal. His goal was to have a free OS free
of copyright privileges. So, he suceeded.

I feel comfortable and even respectable saying Gnu/Linux. But I
don't usually. I think Stallman deserves it. But I'm not exactly
his PR agent either.
