Well.. first.. The preferred way of hooking a 1541 floppy drive to a PC is via
the serial port. Remember.. all C64 drives were serial devices (kind of like
RS485, but just 5v). Here's the cable to make to do this:

They have them for PCs also. That's what most people do now.. hook up strange
floppies (Amgia, old Mac, etc) to PCs via catweasle.

BTW...
Archiving old C64 game disk images aren't doing to do you much good for those
commercially copyrighted games like RSR. It's because they used all kinds of
analog, digital, and induced error forms of copy protection that had to
actually be encountered (in the original floppy in may cases) in the actual
1541 drive. They used the drive's advanced logic (dedicated 6502 + RAM +
ROM) and error correction to "trick" the system into not loading from
copies.. but only originals. This was a blessing (for the SW houses)... but
a curse for C64 users who wanted t archvie their stuff.

So in short.. if you're wanting to archvie a bunch of old games.. that's not
the best way to do it. But those cables ARE the best way to interface live
1541 to emulator software on a PC....

Hope that helps Robert.
