Seems funny that Tulip would want to spend $35M just to buy back the
name "Commodore."
In the US, the name isn't worth much. But in Europe, where Amigas
were much more successful for awhile, perhaps the name recognition
value is worth something, also to help distinguish one set of beige
boxes from all the rest, and they can't afford names like "HP" or
"IBM" which go for gigabucks.
It's sad, but typical, lots of names of old leading US hifi firms are
now owned by Chinese and Koreans who don't do anything similar to the
original companies which either went bust or sold out long ago. I
can think of only one such name still stands for quality, despite
having been resold many times: Marantz. When you have a premium
name, it behooves you to keep up the quality even if your must lose
money on the way, the goal being to resell the name to someone else
later.* But if you have a name that was only associated with
middling quality, you milk it for name recognition value with cheap
stuff at high prices as long as you can.
(* Particularly how it works in some businesses, like the magazine
business or so I've heard. You loose money for a decade, hoping to
unload the company on someone else for a big profit. Helps if you
cook the numbers a bit on the way to make the brand look more
successful than it actually was.)
