Good enough going linear, I've done it both ways, you might consider the 
7805ACT & 7809ACT regulators, the " ACT " provides 2% ouptput 
regulation vice 4% for the "T" suffix.

I've sucessfully used swithcher supplies for both my XM satellite reciever and
my low power FM transmitters, however, ampliying low level inputs would be
more susceptable.  Switcher noise is generated in its'oscillator portion, 
however, if the mfgr used proper filtering, it usually smooths it out. 

I'd fuse the Vcc inputs right where they enter your printed circuit board.
