Is was supported.. Just not fully (and natively).  It was seen as 
another "removable media" SCSI device (John can prolly tell ya more) and 
usually needed a filsystem driver file or two.  However most CD-ROMs that 
folks hooked up back then were or the old removable cartridge variant like 
the NECs:

SO people used them.. they just not really common.

The 3.1 desktop added native CD-ROM support (~1993).
