Sams published many books for the hobbyist/experimenter.  My favorite 
authors were Donald E. Lancaster and Forrest M Mims.  Many of their 
books are still available through Amazon used books.  I can bring a few 
to show you at the next meeting.  Atex Electronics was a local treasure 
because you could wander in and buy only one integrated circuit at a 
time, and they also had all the resistors and capacitor you might need, 
but they have closed, and I don't know if there is anywhere else in town 
that sells integrated circuits.  You may have to go to Austin or Dallas 
for parts.
