    December 16th Meeting Details

  • Dual Head Sun and MultiMedia Demo: By John Baker
John Baker's back up this month and will be showing how to configure multi-head Sun Sparc systems (on his SS20), as well as do real time video capture on Sun hardware. You don't see this every day.

  • GPS Companion for the Handspring Visor Series PDAs: By Tom Weeks
Basically this demo will go over how to use the Magellan GPS module for the Handspring Visor. This little GPS springboard module is nice as it allows you to upload map files, show your location in real time, mark way points, etc. These low cost GPS solutions can now be had at Wal Mart for $79 brand new! If you have a Visor, you need to check this out. If you want to know more about Visor Handspring modules, See Here.

  • Portscanning/Security 101: By Tom Weeks and John Baker
This started off as one friend checking out another friend's home firewall security... and it struck us that the group might like to know more about this subject also.

Basically we're going to go over (in basic terms) internet machine security, port scanning (checking for holes), and basic rules for locking down--or machine machines (even machines at home on RR or ADSL) more secure.

[We bascially just used N-Map to show how to scan a box, see what ports are open, and then how to shut them down.]

If this ad hoc presentation turns out to be very popular, we might develop and expand it a bit for future meetings--getting into more technical details for the benefit of the group. Let us know what you think.

  • Free Stuff!
  • As usual, we will have some Linux Journal magazines to giveaway this month for those who come and enter to win.
  • P I Z Z A - N - C O K E ! Free for those who show up before 7:30. Partially sponsored by Pizza Hut manager Tony de la Pena, at 4250 Fredericksburg(210-736-2721).

  • Other local user groups are ALWAYS more than welcome to attend our meetings...
    No Charges or Dues...
    ever...

    RECRUITERS LOOK HERE

Our user group's members are not your
normal run of the mill geeks. We pride our-
selves in having a wide array of technical and IT
professionals who excel in their fields. I have found
that I can bring most any question to the group and get an
insightful answer, and thus, have begun point recruiters to our
members as a service to both. Feel free to contact the members below
for job history and resume information. They're a powerfully diverse resource!
