  • Home Brew Video-->RGB Scan Converter (on the cheap): By Robert Rusk
Robert (our resident "Hardcore Gamer" and Mac guru) is bringing in a home made Video to RBG converter that he has built from spare parts from a number of other gaming systems. Don't know if he's brining schematics, but it should be cool none the less.

  • Designing your own PC Boards (from scratch) on Linux: By Tweeks
Tweeks is going to be doing a brief presentation on how to make PC board from scratch using software on Linux and board fab vendors.
NOTE: PC Board is not a "Personal Computer" board.. but is a "Printed Circuit Board". What an engineer typically creates to build a permanent circuit.
Very cool. If you've ever tried making your own PCB (with echant and the like), then you'll find this step by step overview, from schematic to final production board, invaluable. Come and check it out. He may also demo his new 127M USB flash drive. Very fun.

  • The resources that tweeks is using for the PCB demo are:
  • PCB: For creating the PCB layout and creating the gerber or PS files to send to the PCB fab house. SCREENSHOT HERE.
  • GerbV: A free gerber viewer to check out your final output before sending it to the fabrication house. SCREENSHOT HERE
  • 4pcb.com: The professional Fab house that cann turn your gerber files into a real live PC board for as little as $33/board, with NO TOOLING OR SETUP CHARGES! I'll bring in a demo board so that you can see he quality work that they do.

  • NetBSD on X-otic and Unique Hardware: By John Baker
John will be dropping by with his SPARCstation 5 (Sparc RISC processor)which he hopes to have configured to "run a RAID5 system on a pile of cast-off 4GB differential SCSI disks".

[UPDATE: John did indeed have his software RAID-5 running. It was using Carnegie Mellon University's RAIDFrame package that John is running on NetBSD.]

John is also bringing his MVME167 (headless) VME Card Cage system (Motorola 68040 processor), "just because you guys seem to freak out when you see it...". :)

He will be running NetBSD on both of these systems.

  • Free Stuff!
  • As usual, we will have some Linux Journal magazines to giveaway this month for those who come and enter to win.
  • P I Z Z A - N - C O K E ! Free for those who show up before 7:30.

  • Other local user groups are ALWAYS more than welcome to attend our meetings...
    No Charges or Dues...

    RECRUITERS LOOK HERE

Our user group's members are not your
normal run of the mill geeks. We pride our-
selves in having a wide array of technical and IT
professionals who excel in their fields. I have found
that I can bring most any question to the group and get an
insightful answer, and thus, have begun point recruiters to our
members as a service to both. Feel free to contact the members below
for job history and resume information. They're a powerfully diverse resource!
